Nikon Lens Compatibility? I got this lens, a Quantaray AF LD 70-300 f/4-5.6 Tele-Macro that came with a 35mm Autofocus, Nikon N65 and I was wondering if it will work in AF with all Nikon DSLR bodies? Or is it limited to only select bodies or something? Compatible Non-CPU lenses. Non-CPU lenses may only be used when the camera is in mode M. Selecting another mode disables the shutter release. Aperture must be adjusted manually via the lens aperture ring and the camera metering system, i-TTL flash control, and other features requiring a CPU lens cannot be used. Some non-CPU lenses cannot be used.

My question is, if I were to ever upgrade would the lenses work on the D90 since the AF motor is internal in the D90 and in the lens on the D5000.ThanksYes, the D90 has/uses both. But really, if you have to ask that question, are you sure you are ready for a D90?No offence intended, but this type of question indicates you are new to this. Switching to a D90 will do little for you. Best that you really become more familiar with what you have, gain more experience then decide.Allan. I understand what you are saying, and no I am not ready. I have had my D5000 for less than a month.
I don't want to spend money on lenses as I learn photography only to find out they are not compatible with other cameras that I may get in the future.Allan Brownwrote:elihusmailswrote:I keep reading the posts about comparing/upgrading from a D5000 to a D90. To the Op, dont get too wrapped up in the lens compatability issue. The mount gives you access to hundreds of lens choices.whether or not AUTO FOCUS is supported is not the holy grail. AF is a choice not a requirement.
Refer to the RANGEFINDER section of your owners manual - it describes use of the exposure meter slide for non AF lenses and works quite wellI mount a zeiss MF lens and get excellent results, as well as a # of AIS primes non DXdont be constrained by feature function. If you have a quality lens, have a basic understanding of exposure, can get results that you want then that is all that matters.

I said it was best not to start. What about all the non AF lenses, many of which can not be mounted on to the D90?There is more to life than AF lenses.AllanAaron@Utahwrote:Allan Brownwrote:Nev Crosswrote:The reverse is true, the D5000 is not compatible with all Nikon lenses, the D90 is compatible with a lot more lenses.Oh, this is averydebatable topic. Best not start.Actually there is not debate the D90 can AF with all Nikon and third party screw drive lenses as well as any of the AF-S lenses which the D5000 has to use to get AF therefore the D90 is more compatible with more lenses that the motor less D5000. John Szetowrote:Most new Nikon lenses are AF-S, which have an internal focusing motor, and work on the D5000 and D90.
There are probably over 130 AF-S lenses available, so if you don't have a bunch of older Nikon (AF)auto focus lenses and don't intend to search E-bay for them, that function of the D90 which uses AF lenses, is not of much value to you. There are many very popularcurrentAF lenses that will not AF on motorless bodies, such as the Tokina 11-16mm, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8 (& f/1.4) to name just a few.Nikon lists about 20 current 'AF' lenses here. Allan Brownwrote:I said it was best not to start. What about all the non AF lenses, many of which can not be mounted on to the D90?There is more to life than AF lenses.AllanThe only ones that willNOTmount to a D90 yet will on a D5000 are the ancient pre-AI lenses.
And even then that's only if they haven't undergone a conversion. AI lenses, which basically constitute all MF lenses from 1978 on, will mount fine on a D90.BTW the reason that that these will work on one but not the other is because the aperture ring limiter (or whatever it's called) located around 8'o'clock on the mount is designed differently.
